Medical Termination Of Pregnancy (MTP)
What is the treatment?
Medical termination pregnancy (MTP) is a method of terminating pregnancy using
medicines. It is feasible only up to 9 weeks of pregnancy, after that surgical
termination takes over. It is one of the safest modes of terminating unwanted pregnancy.
In this method, a set of pills is given to the patient which can be taken orally or by
injection. After this initial medication, another set of pills is given to the patient
which can be taken orally or inserted vaginally at home or clinic. Generally the gap
between these two medicines is 3 to 7 days. Along with the medicines, antibiotics are
also given to prevent any kind of infection. This medication is preceded and followed by
medical examination to determine positive pregnancy and positive abortion. The set of
pills given is also known as abortion pills or RU 486 in medical terms.
Earlier the medication used for medical abortion was Methotrexate and Misoprostol
together known as MTX. Methotrexate is used in the treatment of cancer and is very
strong; hence it was replaced by Mifepristone. Contraceptive pill or the morning after
pill is a birth control pill and is not medical treatment pregnancy. It is only
effective before pregnancy.
Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)
Women who have conceived accidentally and don’t want to have a child can opt for this
treatment but only in the early stages of pregnancy. The maximum time for medical
termination pregnancy is 9 weeks, however some gynecologist prefer it only up to 7 weeks
from missing the first menstrual cycle. After this period, medical termination pregnancy
is not effective and can also lead to serious health problem even death.
Who is not eligible for the treatment?
Women who are suffering from certain conditions are not eligible for medical abortion.
In case of ectopic pregnancy the treatment becomes void. Medical conditions in which
medical termination pregnancy is not applicable are ovarian mass, anemia, adrenal
failure and bleeding and seizure disorders. Patient with liver or kidney problems, heart
disease or high blood pressure are given high dose of antibiotics to prevent any
complications. Women who use an intrauterine device (IUD) are also not eligible for
medical abortion.
At Gynaecology Urology Clinic, privacy and dignity are top priorities. All consultations and procedures are done in a discreet and supportive environment.
